Calgary vs Toronto - Dec.12th, 2019

Well that was a frustrating loss. A winnable game wasted in the third period. For some reason, the Leafs took the foot off the gas and let the Flames burn them with three unanswered goals (see what I did there). I feel like "playing a full 60 minutes" has always been an issue for the Leafs since the mid-90's. During the Quinn, Maurice, Wilson and Carlyle days I remember complaining almost every night about the team not playing hard or smart for a full game (more so under Wilson and Carlyle but can you really blame them?). Games were usually lost in the third, blown leads were a common theme and several times I threatened myself with not being a Leafs fan anymore if it continues. But I toughed it out. Now, I'm obviously not trying to imply that it's panic time and that we're back to those days, it just reminds me of bad times. It's also just aggravating to see another game where there were a lot of good things turn into one for the "L" column.

The first and second period were so dominant from the Leafs I thought there would be no way they were losing this game. The Tavares line and Holl were by far the best players on the ice, Willy had multiple scoring chances, puck possession and offensive zone time was off the charts and Freddy was dialed in again. There was one point in the first period where the Tavares line were moving the puck around in the Flames end for an entire shift and the Leafs were able to make an entire line change while still keeping the puck in.
However, the neutral zone turnovers continue to be a problem. Almost all of them resulted in a shot on goal or a scoring chance. And then when the 3rd period started, they somehow thought they had the game in the bag with only a one goal lead, came out flat and started making sloppy, poor passes. Freddy tried to flip it off the glass over everyone's heads and out of the zone when he had an easy play behind him to Barrie, but he flips the puck too low and it's stopped and passed to Johnny Ham 'n' Cheese to tie the game up. Now you're on your heels.

On the Flames next goal, Spezza makes an unnecessary one-touch pass behind Petan in the neutral zone that's out of his reach, that creates a turnover and Frolik is able to break in and score. I also think Freddy might want that one back because I feel like on Tuesday night, that puck is probably stopped. Also on this play, it looks to me like Barrie initially thinks he can poke the puck from Rieder after Petan fails to retrieve the puck but the distance he is away from the puck is clearly much larger than Rieder's. Barrie is also a little too high up in the zone to begin with after he sends the puck back to Rielly, especially when you already have Aberg at the blue-line on that side. His priority should've been to be conservative in that situation and it bites him in the ass here.

Then on the very next shift, Tavares and Marner just give up playing hockey and watch the Flames move the puck and score.

I thought almost everyone was going to have a grade above a C+, but there are some demotions due to the third period effort.

Report cards:

Sheldon Keefe - A
I'm loving his decision making every game. He had the 1st PP unit stay on the ice for the entire 2-man advantage, he put the 2nd unit out for about 30 seconds when it became 5 on 4, and then got the 1st unit back out again as soon as he could. Babs would've put the 2nd unit out for a full minute when there was 30 seconds left in the 2-man advantage. And it worked because the 1st unit ended up generating more chances the second time they were out than the first time. He doesn't put the fourth line out after his team scores a goal and instead of benching a forward who can't get anything going or let them dig themselves out of a hole by demoting them to the third or fourth line, he tries to stick them on a line with players that can help. I was a little surprised how early he pulled Freddy (more than 3:30 left in the game) but fortunately it didn't backfire.

Justin Holl - A-
What a game from this guy. If you didn't think he was the Leafs best D-man last night, you don't know what you're talking about. There were so many times he had great patience with the puck in his own end where instead of forcing a pass, he'd either turn around to wait for an outlet or hang on to it and fool the Flames forward. His very first shift of the game he had a nice little move at the blue line and it continued from there. Defensively, he was much, much better than Tuesday night. I honestly think he only lost one puck battle in his own end and it was in the 3rd. I was always a Holl fan since seeing him play last pre-season and felt he should've always been in the lineup over Marincin, but for whatever reason Babs just didn't like him. Well, look at him now Mike. He's got great confidence with the puck and he's come a long way.

Zach Hyman - A-
It was another JT/Hyman/Mitch show for the first 40 minutes and another classic Hyman game. It's hard not to regurgitate the reports I gave him the last two nights because they all looked like the same game. On the Leafs second goal, Hyman makes the smart play to go straight to the net forcing Hanifin and Hamonic to be aware of him behind them and also creates traffic in front of Rittich. This leaves JT and Marner to stay high with more open ice. It also helped that the Flames' forwards made a bad line change while the Leafs were on the rush:

Mitch Marner - B+
Could've had an A if he didn't give up on that 4th Flames goal and I saw about 4 blatant turnovers from him. He had that one at the end of the game with the goalie pulled in the o-zone, and two or three in the neutral zone. Other than that though, he was his elite self. So many good plays again; that backhand pass to Tavares on the first goal was sexy. He barely has any room here between the Flames D and the net and he fools everyone by turning his body as if he's going to go to his forehand and possibly throw the puck around the boards to the D:

This was one of his best games of the year. He stole the puck multiple times and actually used his body a few times and was just snapping it around all game. Would obviously love to see more games like this from him.

John Tavares - B+
Same grade demotion as Marner due to his lack of effort on multiple shifts and that fourth Flames goal, but again, he had a strong game and was rewarded with a goal and an apple. The past few games, he's been looking like the Tavares I saw playing in Long Island where he had patience with the puck, used his body to his advantage and made elite plays. More games like this please and thank you! But he can't take shifts off like he did last night.

Morgan Rielly - B+
Better game than Tuesday from him as well. He didn't have many moments where his new lack of speed was an issue this game and he was making much better passes than Tuesday. He looked confident again moving around in the offensive zone and while in the defensive zone he was snapping around solid breakout passes.  That strong back-check and the stick-check he made to stop a breakaway after a bad Barrie pinch got me on my feet. It wasn't a perfect game; he had a moment in the first period where he lost the puck in his own zone and then Barrie was out-beat to the puck which resulted in a Flames scoring chance. He also made the wrong decision to turn around and skate towards his own net on the Frolik goal. I think if he just squared up and skated backwards he could've been able to poke the puck from Rieder or possibly take the body on him. Regardless, that goal wasn't his fault and the rest of his game was one of his better games this year. He had 2 shots on goal, won multiple puck battles, didn't have issues coming out of his own zone and looked more like the Rielly I know and love.

Travis Dermott - B+
Pretty much the same solid game he had Tuesday in Vancouver. I was a Dermott fan as soon as I saw his hustle his first few games as a Leaf and tonight, he had that same hustle. On his first shift in the first period, he had a great back-check and rubbed a guy out to gain possession. He was busting his ass to loose pucks to get there first and then made tape-to-tape passes. NHL.com says he didn't get any shots but I'm almost positive he had at least one in the 2nd period. He didn't have any scoring chances per se but he made some great passes in the offensive zone and defensively he was stellar.  Like the rest of the team though, I saw moments where he let up in the third period and that can't happen.

Freddy Andersen - B+
It looked like another A or A+ game for him until the 3rd period. He made a couple backyard catches again, was shutting down the few scoring opportunities the Flames had and as usual, was giving his team a chance to win. Then he makes the wrong decision to flip it off the glass which results in a goal. The Frolik shot wasn't weak by any means but I still think he could've made a save on that. My mom was always happy when I got a B+ on my report cards though.

William Nylander - B+
He had buckets of scoring chances and shots last night but again couldn't just get one past the goalie. I thought for sure he was going to score. I loved his puck movement and he had a great effort until the third period obviously, but I was happy with his game for the most part. However, it wasn't all roses. On this first Flames goal, he comes off the bench and skates across the ice to Marner's side and then hangs out in the middle of the ice leaving the left side wide open for Hamonic to walk in. He should've stayed on that side to cover any Flames coming in the zone because Tavares is late back-checking, for whatever reason. You also have four Leafs players on one side of the ice here:

Auston Matthews - B
This was an odd game for me to grade for everyone but especially for Papi. He had some great scoring chances again but just couldn't bury. He rang one off the post in the 3rd that I thought for sure was going in but I thought he was also kind of fighting the puck a lot - he had two glaring moments where he just lost it stick handling which resulted in a turnover; once in the neutral zone and once in the offensive zone. He turned it over twice again in his own zone but he'd make up for it later by pushing someone off the puck or stealing it back. I think he needs to use his speed more. Last night there were times where he could've just skated around a guy with the puck and get to the net but instead he'd stop moving his feet and look to make a fancy pass. He looked lazy in the third period to me at times but near the end of the game made some nice passes in front of the net that were almost goals. I also loved that he got pissed and knocked Hamonic on his ass behind the net late in the game. Not a complete all-around game from him and he needs to be better than that.

Ilya Mikheyev - B-
Better game for him than Tuesday night and had some shots on goal. He had his best shift in the second period where he went for a skate with the puck in the o-zone twice around and had two scoring chances on that shift. I love the way he buckles down when he carries the puck around a defender and prepares to use his size and speed if someone tries to push him off the puck or steal it from him. I'm not expecting him to get a goal every game because he doesn't really seem to have a great shot, but if his line mates can play consistently he could start getting some goals. He's a lunch-pale guy and should be getting some more garbage goals.

Pierre Engvall - B-
I didn't have anything bad written down for the Giraffe at all. I'm biased because I'm an Engvall fan, but he created two turnovers by knocking the puck loose from a Flame and he had nice little move that he made around Lucic in the D-zone during the 2nd period. He's great defensively and he's a smart player at both ends of the ice. I know his line didn't get any points and they didn't generate offence like the first two lines, but you can't really complain about a tight first two periods like that from your third line.

Jake Muzzin - B-
Much better game from him too. Two nice hits; one on Tkachuk and one on Monahan. He had 2 shots on goal and was making better passes for the most part. However, he ended up being a -2 and there were some brutal passes from him. He fanned on one in the neutral zone which forced Holl to try and fetch it and ended up taking an unintentional penalty on the play. But then on that PK, he broke up a play and was able to clear the puck out of the zone. He had two passes that would've been considered suicide passes back in the day, but in this day and age the puck is just poked or stolen instead of the guy being flattened. I saw him turn the puck over in his own end with about 30 seconds left in the 2nd and he made a muffin pass along the boards to Hyman in the third. I still liked the majority of his play last night but I know he can still have better games.

Cody Ceci - B-
Another pretty solid game for Ceci again. I don't know if he's on the Russian Gas or what but I'll take it. Of course he's no Lidstrom, but I had more positive things written down than negative. For the positive: he won several puck battles in his own end or was able to rub a guy out for another Leaf to pick up the puck, kept the puck in the o-zone a few times, made a nice backhand pass behind his net to Dermott and he ended up getting another assist. For the negative: he's not a good skater, he was slow to get to loose pucks a few times, he made a brutal pass into Engvall's skates in the 3rd and later on he flipped a backhand pass to Hyman on the side boards when he had time to just pass it normally and not force Hyman to battle the retrieval. Considering he didn't singlehandedly cost any of his team's goals and he got a point, solid game from Cody.

Tyson Barrie - C+
This was a bit of a rocky game from him again. Half of his game was solid and the other half was not. He started the game great but then made some mistakes that looked more like a bottom pair defenceman than a top pairing one. He had a shot on goal on his first or second shift and then broke up a pass in his own end. But as time went on, he was out-beat to the puck on a delayed icing call and a scoring chance ensued, he left Rielly out to dry on that pinch to back-check hard and stop the Mangiapane breakaway,  he got beat to the puck multiple times, his pinching was successful only 50% of the time and he allowed multiple scoring chances. He definitely did not have a great 3rd period. I mentioned earlier his poor decision on that Spezza giveaway on the neutral zone that lead to the Frolik goal, and when they had pressure in the 3rd period and he got the puck at the blue-line, he had a clear shot to the net and missed it wide. There was a moment when he had time to keep possession in his own end and wait for an outlet pass but instead just slapped it around the boards which was a turnover. He still hasn't really impressed me this year and it's just decreasing the dollar amount on his upcoming contract renewal.

Alex Kerfoot - C+
Better game for him than Tuesday night. He had no problem this time carrying the puck in and looked the opposite of slow out there. However, just not much offence created from him. I was high on him before this year but it's clear he's not Kadri. The thing that frustrates me the most is he never hits anybody. So many times he has hits lined up along the boards and he just swats or pokes at the puck with his stick which almost never works. I know he's not a big guy, but neither was Kadri and neither is Kapanen and they throw their weight around when they can. The only time I really saw a hit from him was a dangerous play that he got suspended two games for.

Pontus Aberg - C
Again, barely noticeable but did some good things. It's clear to me that's he's not as fast as the rest of his teammates which is why I like him better on the fourth line than with Matthews and Nylander. He missed an easy pass from Spezza in the neutral zone that resulted in a turnover but then made up for it in the 2nd period when he stole the puck in his own zone and chipped it to Hyman who carried it down the ice and got it over to Marner who had a scoring chance. Other than that, I forgot he was in the lineup which is probably a good thing - it means he's not out of place.

Kasperi Kapanen - C
This kid needs to focus and pick up his game. He can be much, much better. He had a terrible game Tuesday but last night he at least had a couple chances. He's definitely not as smart of a hockey player as his line mates though. He makes some dumb decisions with the puck and had 3-4 neutral zone turnovers. At one point in the 2nd, Matthews gave him an easy neutral zone pass and Kappy somehow just botched the retrieval and turned it over and the play ended up in his own end. There was a play later on where Mikheyev was rushing towards the net and Kappy threw a pass to him that was the right idea but missed him. I still love his hustle most nights though. He had some solid defensive efforts and used his body well and had a shot on goal after a nice pass from Willy in the 3rd period. Still need much more from him. Last night was a game where Matthews and Willy couldn't bury and you need your depth guys to chip in and it just didn't happen.

Jason Spezza - C-
Kind of a rough game for him tonight. He didn't need to one-touch that pass to Petan in the neutral zone that resulted in the Flames goal. I know he thought Petan wasn't going to move towards the blue-line but he had time to stop it on his stick first which would've given him the time to see Petan move forward. That could've been a better pass for him to make on Petan's tape, throw it on Barrie's tape for him to carry it or flip it in the zone, or he could've banked it off the boards into the corner for Petan to chase it. He made a couple more poor passes in his own zone as well. For the first two periods though, he was winning puck battles and had a nice shot on the PP but his errors outweighed the positives this time.

Nic Petan - C-
His motto should be "poor kid". I absolutely love his hustle every game which I feel doesn't deserve a D grade, but he's just not a smart professional hockey player and he fought the puck again last night. He's still skilled though; he usually has nice hands when he has the puck and he's a solid skater. But in terms of hockey IQ and being consistent, it's just not there. He lost the puck stick-handling in his own end in the first period with no one around him and had a couple bad outs from his end from just fighting the puck on his stick. He might forever be a "bubble" guy: not quite good enough for the show but a great AHLer. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Vancouver vs Toronto - Dec.10th, 2019

What an entertaining game. For some reason I was expecting a mediocre effort from both teams - which could've been because it was a late game and I was tired so I was feeling mediocre myself - but again I was proved wrong. The Canucks are finally fun to watch and even better, I don't have to watch Burrows, Kesler and/or Miller. However, as a Leafs fan I still don't like them.

As always though, there were good things and bad things from the Leafs in this game. Much like the game against the Blues the other night, it was by no means a perfect game from the entire roster but it was a good turnout from the Tavares line, Matthews and your number one starting goaltender (again). There were a few times the D got caught sleeping which created too many breakaways for one game but Freddy bailed them out every time.

Report Cards:

Freddy Andersen - A+
I don't care if he didn't get a shutout, that was an unreal game from him so he deserves an A+. He stopped every breakaway (Boeser will be seeing him in his nightmares) bailing out his D, prevented huge rebounds and made glove saves like he was playing backyard catch. He looked poised, relaxed and confident which only helps the players in front of him. On the only goal that was scored on him, if the Leafs had focused more on throwing Canucks players on their asses instead of staring down at the puck, I think that goal could have been prevented. It also didn't help that Muzzin made a terrible giveaway that lead to a shot on goal in the first place, but we'll get to that later.

John Tavares/Zach Hyman/Mitch Marner - A
I felt like this game was just the Hyman/JT/Mitch show. They were dominant every single shift and at least one of them had a point on every Leafs goal.

This might have been Johnny's best game of the year. He was first to every puck he could, he had 5 shots on goal and got two goals and an assist. He was confident and patient with the puck, made a couple poor passes in the first period but was lights out the rest of the game. As the captain, this is how he needs to play every game.

Mitch had an even better game than he did against the Blues. His hands are just so good and he makes so many smart passes that turn into scoring chances. He made a couple ridiculous saucer passes like this one which resulted in a scoring chance:

This one in particular doesn't look very special but it was a very smart play to bank this pass off the boards out of Roussel's reach instead of making a straight pass to his D where Roussel could've gotten a stick on it:

It's little things like this that make him an elite playmaker.

It was yet another classic Hyman game: applying pressure, forcing turnovers, winning puck battles and helping to create a few scoring chances. His pressure forced a turnover where he was able to pop in a well deserved empty netter. He was also looking for passes in the offensive zone on the rush instead of dumping and chasing. However, I don't even care when he dumps it in because he's always first to the puck. It's almost a stretch pass to himself.

Auston Matthews - A
Another strong game from Papi. His hands were lethal as usual and he looked pretty dominant out there and was rewarded with a gino. I mean, look at this effortless dangle:

Travis Dermott - B+
Much better game from him than against St. Louis. He was back to his confident self with the puck in his own end and was carrying it through the neutral zone a couple times. He made a beauty between-the-legs pass behind his own net in the second period allowing the Leafs to break out of the zone. There were a few times defensively he wasn't aware of his Canucks' players around him, but I feel like half of that is because he's used to having to predict where Ceci is going to go.

Morgan Rielly - B-
Better game from Mo than against the Blues but he still looks slower than he used to and he made multiple terrible passes in this game. I thought his second half of the game was much better than his first half. There was a moment in the first period where he tried making a pass to Marner along the opposing blue line but couldn't put it on his tape, in the 2nd period he tried to make a breakout pass to Kerfoot but ended up icing it, he made two poor passes in the neutral zone to Barrie where they lost possession, and on the second Boeser breakway, he looked slow to transition but to his credit, he did a great job stopping the play with a stellar diving effort.

Tyson Barrie - B-
He's had worse games under Babs that's for sure, but he's still not the same player he was in Colorado. Like Rielly, he made some bone-head passes like this one that can't happen from a player like him:

There were a few times he got beat to the puck in his own end and was late to react to transitioning from offence to defence. He was much better on the PP than 5v5 but again, I think he and Rielly still need to tighten up defensively.

William Nylander - B-
This was a weird game for him. It wasn't terrible, it was just quiet. He started out absolutely flying in the first period with two scoring chances but then he just kind of cooled down for the rest of the game. His hands weren't as slick as they were against the Blues but he still looked like one of the more superior passers on the ice until he made this terrible pass off Aberg's skate which turned into another breakaway for Boeser:

Despite that, he didn't really make any more mistakes and he obviously still kept up with Auston but he definitely wasn't as good as he was against the Blues.

Pierre Engvall - B-
He wasn't noticeable but he did a solid job on the PK again and I love the way he uses his wide stance to defend against opposing players trying to carry the puck around him. He seems like he's fairly tough to play against and it's what he does without the puck that makes him a smart player. I honestly didn't see mistakes from him last night and he managed to get two shots on goal. I think he's had a better game in the past but I don't have anything bad to say about him which keeps him in the B grade range.

Cody Ceci - B-
Shockingly, another pretty solid game from Ceci. There was one moment where he made a brutal pass into Kerfoot's feet in his own end and the puck ended up staying in his own end until Freddy was able to freeze it. But he had a nice shot in the 2nd that Tavares was able to tip in beautifully. Almost all of his passes were on the tape - however there was one moment where he slapped the puck up his own boards and it was stopped by the Canucks' D and kept in the zone (classic Ceci play that drives me nuts) - but I'm still giving him a B- and not a C+ for getting a point and making less than four mistakes.

Justin Holl - C+
I know he got two assists but that's why I'm bumping him up from a C- to a C+. There were good moments of course but overall I didn't think he had a very good game because I've seen a much better 60 minutes from him before. Most of his woes occurred in his own zone; a few times he tried to throw the puck off the boards or tried to make a breakout pass which resulted in a turnover which then lead to a shot on Freddy. He lost a couple puck battles in the corners and made some poor passes behind his own net. He was beat to the outside by Leivo in the third period which again resulted in a shot on goal. However, on the opposite end of the ice, I thought he played well. I'm not faulting him for the first Boeser breakaway because Muzzin left him out to dry. He made a nice move at the blue line to make a pass to Marner who got a shot off 5 minutes into the first period, he got that shot off just wide of the net on the first goal where Matthews was able to put it in, and then he had great patience with the puck on the PP to make a pass to JT to score. But his defensive game demotes his grade to a C+.

Alex Kerfoot - C+
He wasn't terrible last night, but multiple times he couldn't get the puck in the o-zone. He was either rubbed out along the boards and lost possession or turned it over. I still liked his effort but I've seen him carry it in and set up before and last night he just didn't have it. His line didn't generate any offence at all but out of the three of them, I think he was the best player.

Ilya Mikheyev, Pontus Aberg and Jason Spezza - C
I'm lumping all three of these guys together because I barely noticed any of them. Up until the end of the second period, I honestly didn't even know Aberg and Spezza were playing. Mikheyev still managed to get three shots on goal, but he didn't look as good as he has earlier this year. Aberg won two puck battles but other than that, I didn't really notice him except when he either fell or was knocked over twice. None of them made any egregious mistakes and for that, an average grade for an average game.

Kasperi Kapanen - C-
I was going to give him a D but I'm bumping him up to a C- for sticking up for his goaltender at the end of the game and mixing it up with Beagle. I know the Leafs aren't a physical, tough team but it's part of the hockey code to stick up for your players and I rarely see any of that, so it's great to finally see. I also loved that he blocked a shot at the end of the game. He had about one good shift in the 3rd, but the rest of the game he really fought the puck and couldn't get anything going. He made multiple terrible passes that lead to turnovers. Additionally, I put $20 on him to have a bounce back game and score last night but instead he had a brutal game and didn't even get a point, so I'm a little pissed he cost me money too.

Nic Petan - D
Poor kid. This was unfortunately an even worse game than the other night. He was really fighting the puck. Three times he lost possession which lead to shots on Freddy, one of which just missed the net and could've been a goal. At one point in the 2nd, he was carrying it through the neutral zone and had a clear outlet pass to Engvall but instead flipped the puck in the zone which lead to nothing. I think it's safe to say he's definitely the odd man out once Moore is back (which should be soon).

Jake Muzzin - D
I think this was one of Muzzin's worst games. I lost count of how many turnovers he had and how many times he didn't get the puck out of his zone (again) but it's not a good look. On this play, I don't know why he felt the need to go across the ice to the side Holl is already on and try to pinch, leaving Boeser all alone on the far side and Holl having to bust his ass to try and stop a breakaway:

It was also his giveaway that lead to the Canucks' first goal, and then - like I mentioned earlier - he didn't use his body to throw guys out of the crease and instead stared at the puck until Leivo poked it in the net. Can't have games like this if (big "if") they make the playoffs.

St.Louis vs Toronto - Dec.7th, 2019

I'm not going to lie, I was not expecting a W before last night. Fortunately, I was proved wrong. As much as I loved a lot of things from the boys tonight, the Blues had a pretty abysmal first period. When they did get a chance to score, Freddy came up huge. Without this save in the first period, it could've been a very different game:

The Leafs had a lot of turnovers. Dermott had one in his own end which cost his a team goal here:

On the second goal, Mikheyev coughs up the puck along the boards, the puck ends up on the opposite side where Ceci decides to chase the puck carrier from the goal line to the blue line leaving Kerfoot to cover for him, which he doesn't. This leaves Dermott all alone in front with two Blues players.

Finally, the Leafs were able to score first in a game which is something that needs to continue going forward. Before Babcock was canned, the Leafs allowed the first goal 14 out of their 19 games. That being said, they're first in wins when their opponent scores first, but you can't keep crawling back the majority of your games all season long. Eventually, it will catch up to you. Bottom line, Leafs have to play well for a full 60 minutes consistently. For the most part, that happened the other night against the Blues but if St. Louis had had a better first period, they could've capitalized on the Leafs' turnovers and it could've been a much different game.

But let's get to the report cards.

Freddy Andersen - A
The only reason he doesn't get an A+ is because he didn't get a shutout. Other than that, pretty perfect game from your starting goaltender. Made several big saves when his team needed them and continues to give them a chance to win.

Zach Hyman - A
Another classic Hyman game and he was rewarded with two goals. He's not necessarily skilled but he's always winning battles; one where he stole the puck from a defender and made a nice pass to Rielly who unfortunately hit the post. He continues to be one of my favourite players. Hard not to like a good Canadian boy that writes children's novels in his spare time.

William Nylander - A-
Willy's hands are just ridiculous. Several times he effortlessly showed his stick handling skills and edge work. He and Matthews are so good at protecting the puck and using their edges to get around defenders. Here he is keeping it away in a tight space away from de la Rose and the play ended up in a shot on net:

Here, he steals the puck and then moves his hands and body to open ice away from defenders and makes a nice little pass to Rielly, who hits another post:

Pierre Engvall - A-
Another solid game from Engvall and got a point out of it. Luckily, Perron threw a muffin directly on the Giraffe's tape and made an easy play to Hyman for the goal. It was risky to be almost on top of Binnington before making the pass over to Hyman - Binnington could have easily poke-checked and stopped the pass - but he sold it well enough that it seemed like he might actually shoot. He's also proven to me he's one of the team's top penalty killers now. Twice, instead of dumping it in he turned back into his zone with the puck and kept it until he could make a play like this one:

Auston Matthews - B+
I know what you're thinking - "you're giving Engvall a better rating than Matthews, who scored two goals?" He did play great with Willy, shot the puck more, had a few chances got two tucks (one which was one of the weirdest goals I think I've ever seen), but he still had a few turnovers that cannot happen from a player like him, so I'm docking him some points. He had two in the neutral zone which seems to be a common theme this year, and one in his own zone. He still has ridiculous hands and this move looked so effortless:
Are you kidding me!?

John Tavares - B+
Johnny was getting to the puck first, creating chances and making solid passes. He's not a flashy player but he did his job and if he keeps that up, Mitchy should benefit greatly.

Mitch Marner - B+
He was flying as usual, but I was expecting more from him. He had a couple chances but I didn't feel he was as dominant as Willy or Auston. Still can't really complain though. He forced a turnover and then made a great cross-ice pass pass to Hyman on the first goal, which Binnington probably wants back:

Jason Spezza - B+
Spezz started out a little rocky but picked it up as the game went on. He made a terrible breakout pass that resulted in a turnover on his first shift, but he looked great on the PP throughout the game. Who knew he could shoot like that? He showed off his shot again with a great chance later in the game after a great pass from lil Petan here:

Pontus Aberg - B
I can't really say anything bad about this guy. Playing his first NHL game since March 25th, he did his job on the top line and ending up getting an assist. It was pretty much the Willy/Matthews line and Aberg would come in, chip the puck out and then disappear again into the night. I don't see him staying in the line-up once Johnsson and Moore are back though. I think Engvall has asserted himself into the line-up over Timashov now but Aberg could now be an option over Petan. We shall see.

Nic Petan - B-
He didn't turn the puck over, he wasn't a liability defensively and he made some nice passes. I don't expect guys like him, Engvall and Aberg to be going out and scoring a goal or getting an assist every shift, so he deserves a solid B- for the type of player he is. Like I mentioned earlier, he made that nice little pass to Spezza who got a nice shot off, but other than, just a solidly quiet game. He used to dump the puck in as soon as he got to the red line but I can see now that he's starting to carry it in and keep possession - something Keefe has obviously implemented since being hired. We'll see if he stays in the lineup until Johnsson is back, but if everyone is healthy when he's back I think the fourth line will be Moore-Spezza-Engvall.

Kasperi Kapanen - B-
He's definitely the best player on his line but I still think he's better than this. He showed moments last year where he was a top 6 forward to me and this year I haven't seen it as much. He still moved the puck around nicely, couple turnovers but didn't see him as a liability. He was back-checking and him and Mikheyev did a solid job on the forecheck, making sure they applied pressured and not giving the defenders any room out there. In spite of his offensive woes, not complaining at all about his efforts without the puck.

Ilya Mikheyev - C+
He had great moments but he also turned the puck over a couple times and one of those turnovers cost his team a goal. I wish I had more head of this video clip to show the full play of Mikheyev on the side boards and losing the puck, but I unfortunately don't have online access to the full game. But you can see here on the Blues' second goal that he's tried to get the puck out unsuccessfully, which enables the Blues to send the puck to the opposite side which results in a goal:

The first goal wasn't necessarily his fault (Dermott turned the puck over with a no-look pass), but he was puck-watching instead of covering his man after Dermott made the poor pass which could've prevented the goal. He still used his size and speed to get around opposing players and he had a scoring chance in the first period on a play with Kapanen. Being on the ice for the only two opposing goals isn't a great look, but I still liked the rest of his game.

Alex Kerfoot - C+
I thought he had a great effort, was fast and didn't make many mistakes. Until he flipped the puck over the glass and took a penalty which is why I'm docking him a couple points. He wasn't very noticeable but his line did a decent job of keeping the puck in the Blues end and getting some shots on net. I'd like to see him stay on a line with the Soup Man and Kappy. The goals will come if they can elevate their games from this one. I didn't like his lack of defensive awareness on the Blues' second goal though. While it was Dermott's man that got the deflection, Kerfoot failed to realize that he has to cover for Ceci and instead was puck-watching, leaving a man wide open behind him. If that deflection is stopped by Freddy and there's a rebound, de la Rose could've buried:

Jake Muzzin - C+
Muzzin is still having a hard time getting the puck out of his own end and it's starting to upset me a little bit. He tried to clear it out of the zone and fanned on it on the PK which is not good timing to do that. Luckily, Blues were playing poor enough in the first period that they didn't capitalize but they ended up getting a scoring chance on the play. I didn't like his decision making the puck this game but I still love his physicality. I've always been a fan of the grinders and lunch pale workers instead of the skilled stars (Gary Roberts is my all time favourite Leaf) and other than Hyman, Muzzin is always throwing his weight around. Opposing forwards need to be afraid to play against some of the Leafs D but I think Jake is the only one. This hit was clean and we need more of it:

Tyson Barrie - C+
I wasn't thrilled with his game last night. He looked much better in the first four games since Keefe was hired, but last night he didn't look the same. I don't know if he's still bummed he's not playing for Colorado, but he needs to get over it and accept the fact that he's a Leaf and if he doesn't step it up this year, he's not getting paid as much as he should be in the off-season. It wasn't a terrible game from him; he still looks more confident with the puck than he did under Babs. I just think he's capable of much more which is why I'm docking him some points for the type of player he should be.

Cody Ceci - C-
Again, Ceci had a pretty solid game. He won battles in his own and allowed his team to break out of the zone cleanly, which is all you can ask for from a defensive defenceman with cement hands. He still made a play in the neutral zone where he dumped it in instead of keeping the possession of the puck, yet there weren't any Leafs forwards skating into the zone to get it, therefore just giving the Blues possession. He chased the puck carrier to the blue line on the Blues' second goal, but re-watching it, it's clear he was the only Leaf on the strong side that would be able to apply pressure. Dermott and Kerfoot had poor defensive coverage on the play.

Morgan Rielly - C-
I cared less for Mo's game than Barrie's. He still doesn't look like his regular self. This play, you can clearly see he doesn't have the same speed that he used to and he's forced to just get a shot off knowing he won't be able to beat the forward:

He made a really dumb pinch in the first period and then took a lazy hooking penalty trying to recover. It's really disappointing to see him have half the year he had last year.

Justin Holl - C-
He still looks like an NHL player to me (Babs...). However, not his best game. He made a terrible pass to Engvall in the second period and then took a penalty on the same play. I still feel like there would be a hole in the D-core if he wasn't in the line-up anymore though. Hopefully he can redeem himself Tuesday night.

Travis Dermott - D+
Not his best game either. He was on the ice for the Blues' only two goals: he made that brutal no-look pass to Mikheyev in his own end which resulted in a goal, he failed to cover his man who deflected the 2nd goal in and he just wasn't making Travis Dermott decisions with the puck. I still love his physicality, getting into that involuntarily fight with Troy Brouwer where he was clearing just trying to hang on until the linesman stepped in. Regardless, the Leafs need more of that "take-no-shit" mentality instead of "I-guess-we-can-take-some-shit".

Colorado at Toronto - Dec.4, 2019

Frederik Andersen walked into Sheldon Keefe's office Wednesday and said "I want to play again tonight". That could've been a message to his teammates that they need to come out flying now that he's giving them a chance to win, or he just simply wanted to redeem himself with a win. Either way I love the determination. Unfortunately, it didn't work out as planned.

I didn't think Freddy was the issue at all Tuesday night against Philadelphia. The team lost that game because the players in front of him didn't play with the heart that they played with last night against Colorado. Guys were back-checking hard, winning puck battles along the boards, even throwing their weight around which I couldn't believe. Freddy was solid as usual, making great saves on several scoring chances. This is how the Leafs need to play every night going forward. Hell, even Mitch Marner who just came back from a high ankle sprain tried to stop an empty netter slapshot by making a mini-sticks goalie save. It looked clear to me that the boys wanted to win tonight.

"The Spezza play" was very unfortunate. That's the best way to describe it. He actually had a great shift until a shot hit his stick which broke instantaneously. It seems like he skated over to the puck to try and keep it the zone with his skate, unaware that Rielly was behind him and then he just wasn't sure whether he should move out of the way and risk hitting Rielly's stick with his knee, or just stand there and let him take the puck. Tough position to be in. However, you need your best players to go out after that goal with an answer. I thought Keefe should've taken a timeout and let Matthews, Willy and Mitch rest and regroup.

Keefe mixed it up halfway through the first period by putting Rielly and Barrie together and dropping Ceci down to the third pairing with Dermott which seemed to work very well. He then decided to put Marner with Willy and Matthews and it was obvious that also works very well. I thought for sure we were going to see a goal from that line but such is life. Keefe then changed some things around again in the 2nd by reuniting the Hyman-Tavares-Marner line. He also double shifted the Matthews line multiple times and limited the fourth line's playing time significantly. It's clear he is fortunately nothing like Babcock and is willing to try new things during a game. He's letting his players just go out and do what they do best and trying to give them a little push by surrounding the best players with each other. So far, I'm loving the Keefe-era.

Despite playing well, you need to pull out a win. To their credit they pressured very well the last 3 minutes of the game, but I'm not seeing the Leafs best players be stars when they need to most. I hate to bring up comparisons of other players on other teams in different circumstances, but guys like MacKinnon, Malkin, Draisaitl, Pastrnak, Marchand, etc. step up when they need to most and score goals. If you want to be one of the highest paid forwards in the NHL, you have to play like it. Which brings me to the report cards for last night.

Frederik Andersen - A
Freddy asked the coach to play, wanted to win and played like it. He made some huge saves, prevented several goals from happening, covered up rebounds and gave the team a solid chance to win. It's a shame the guys in front of him couldn't get it done but that was the definition of what you want a starting goaltender performance to look like.

Zach Hyman - A-
Classic Zach Hyman game: worked his balls off, hit people, won every puck battle and had a tuck. The Hyman-Kerfoot-Kapenen line was great, keeping the puck in the offensive zone and creating multiple scoring chances. There was one point near the end of the first period where Hyman won a puck battle by himself along the offensive zone boards against two Avs players. I wish every Leaf played with the heart Hyman has every night.

Kasperi Kapanen - B+
Kappy was throwing his weight around and played great with Hyman and Kerfoot. At one point he finished a check on Calvert who then tried to fight Kappy, which just made Calvert look like an idiot. It was a clean hit. He was back-checking hard, playing both ends of the ice. Obviously not a perfect game from him as he didn't score but I loved his intensity, his work ethic and if he keeps playing like that, the goals will come.

Alex Kerfoot - B+
In addition to Kappy, he was flying around and making solid passes in the offensive zone. Like I mentioned earlier, his line created scoring chances and weren't a liability defensively. He made an excellent no-looker pass to Hyman who subsequently deflected it past Grubauer. Plus, he still can't eat solid food.

Travis Dermott - B+
I rarely have anything bad to say about this guy. He never quits and he comes to play every night. He made some great hits, was working his ass off to get to the puck first, keeping the puck in the O-zone and was making beauty passes. He was carrying the puck into the zone from his own end which I saw a lot last year but I feel like Babs told him to cut it out. Hopefully with Keefe, he'll remember he needs to do more of it.

Cody Ceci - B
I can't believe I'm going to say this, but Cody Ceci actually had a solid hockey game last night. He broke up plays, made tape-to-tape passes(!) and didn't look out of place. I actually marked down "a solid pass to Marner blue line-blue line" on the PK in the 3rd period where he would've normally just dumped it in with a clapper. However, there was one classic Ceci play with about 3:15 left in the first where he hesitated for at least a full 2 seconds on going to get a loose puck with no one around. It almost looked like he was contemplating whether or not he even wanted to be on the ice. Other than that though, he didn't make mistakes and he was just a solid defensive defenceman. Need more games like this from him.

Mitch Marner - B
I thought it was too early for him to come back from a high ankle sprain but he didn't look like he missed any time. Several analysts and/or insiders who have spoken with trainers or doctors have said that once you feel 100% coming off of a high ankle sprain, give it 1-2 more weeks. He was still flying, had some great opportunities and played great with Matthews. I think he needs to shoot more. He doesn't have a bullet like Auston, but when he has the opportunity, instead of trying to deke he needs to just shoot it.

William Nylander - B
Had multiple scoring chances, made great passes and had great puck possession. He looked like one of the better players on the ice but unfortunately couldn't come up with any points.

Justin Holl - B
I thought he did not have a great game Tuesday night but last night he redeemed himself. He broke up plays, one odd man rush in the first where he stopped a pass to the net. In the 2nd, he broke up a play and then in the same shift made a great play to get the puck in the O-zone. Him and Dermott have been the most consistent D-men for the Leafs this season.

Auston Matthews - B-
Matthews always has great numbers, but when you watch him play, the numbers don't equate with his performance on the ice. He can be much, much better. Last year, I was expecting something great from him every time he was on the ice. He was flying around the ice, cycling beautifully in the offensive zone, dancing and dangling around guys along the boards and ripping wrist shots in the net from anywhere. I haven't seen that this on a consistent basis this year. I rarely see the dangling along the boards anymore, his wrist shots are just going into the stomach or pads of the opposing goalie, the shots don't feel as lethal every time he shoots and I don't see that solid cycling every game. There has been too many games this year where he's had a lack of effort which shows me that the staff made the right decision in naming Tavares captain. However, last night he was actually using his body instead of making stick checks which the Leafs need to do more of and he was back-checking like he used to. He made some questionable passes - he actually turned the puck over twice in the neutral zone - and like Marner, he needs to shoot more because he does have a bullet. He should be at least an A- every night.

Ilya Mikheyev - B-
Another solid effort from the Soup Man. I thought he especially had a great first period which made me believe he was going to score last night. He made a great pass to Tavares in the 2nd but Grubauer stopped him. He's not a flashy player but he does a great job of using those long legs to beat defenceman on the outside when carrying the puck in. He's a great net-front presence and he's hard to push off the puck.

John Tavares - B-
I find Johnny to be kind of invisible until he gets a scoring chance. During the Babs days earlier this year, there were a stretch of games where I was convinced he was hurt based on his lack of effort and his poor performance. But last night he seemed to have some jump and since Keefe has been brought into the picture, he doesn't seem injured to me anymore. He had a great chance on that Mikheyev pass but he was just too close to the goalie and didn't have an opportunity for a solid shot. He carried the puck in with great speed in the 3rd period but only got a mediocre shot off. He made a couple muffin passes in the neutral zone, as did Matthews, but he definitely wasn't a liability and his line had some chances to score.

Andreas Johnsson - B-
I thought he was okay until getting hurt by a blocking a shot. He was back-checking hard and trying to get to the puck first. He was using his body to bump some guys off the puck at times but unfortunately had to leave the game after the 2nd.

Morgan Rielly - C+
This was actually one of Mo's better games this season, but whatever is hurting him is clearly still hindering his play. He's not moving like he used to last year and he doesn't have the same speed. Many times last season, we saw him fly down the wing and join the rush or carry it in from his own end and try to set up a play. I rarely see that anymore from him but I saw glimpses of it last night. At one point in the 2nd, he bumped someone off the puck forcing a turnover and then jumped up on the rush. However, the times he tried to join the rush it seemed like he was just a stride or two from keeping up with the forwards. Many times I've seen him carry it to the red line and realize he won't be able to beat the opposing player and shoots it in their zone. He iced a couple passes, he fumbled the puck behind his own net in the 2nd period and in the 3rd period, turning it over both times. He missed a practice last week because his "injury" was bothering him. Despite him playing over 25 minutes last night, I fear that it's something that requires surgery but needs to wait until the off-season and I hope his ice-time doesn't make things worse. Regardless, he's not the same Rielly we know he can be.

Tyson Barrie- C+
I thought this was a solid game from him again and he looks like he has some confidence back. He made an end-to-end rush in the 2nd period but it was broken up once he got into their zone. Still love that he's trying that. He's clearly better off not playing with Muzzin. I thought Barrie was kind of invisible in the first period though which can be good and bad. He iced a pass in the second period but he didn't make any blatant mistakes out there. I thought he was fine on the PP but he needs to use his shot from the point more.

Jason Spezza - C
Ugh, the poor guy. I don't even want to talk about "the play" because it makes me cringe. I feel bad for the guy, he just didn't know where to go. He had a decent game up until that point. He had a great carry-in on the PP in the 3rd but he broke his stick on the shot (foreshadowing?). Also later in the 3rd, he had made a great play behind the net, centering it out front but unfortunately no one was there. I think he's had better games and definitely wants to forget that ending, but I wouldn't mind seeing him play like this or better every night.

Jake Muzzin - D
Pretty bad game overall for Muzzin. There were several times where he couldn't get the puck out of his own end, iced a few passes and with about 15 seconds left in the first period he passed the puck to literally no one, forcing a turnover. At around the 10:30 mark in the 2nd, he has the puck near the face-off dot in his own end and instead of throwing a pass back around his own net to the opposite side boards or flicking it over everyone out of the zone or looking for a cross-ice pass, he skates towards the boards and tries to eat it where the Avs won the puck battle which could've easily formed into a goal. He took a penalty in the 3rd period.

Pierre Engvall - D
Two giveaways in the first period on his first two shifts, didn't really do much offensively or defensively and this line barely played. When watching Marlies games, he always looks like one of the best players on the ice but here, not so much. He had a hot start but I don't seem producing at that pace on the fourth line. He doesn't require waivers so he'll be the first one to be sent down once Moore is back. I'd honestly rather see the Goat instead of the Giraffe in the lineup anyhow.

Dmytro Timashov - F
Pretty disastrous game for Timo. I thought he had a really lazy first two shifts of the game and then the fourth line didn't play at all the second half of the first period. Then he takes a dumb, blatant hooking penalty around the 10:00 mark of the second period which MacKinnon capitalized on and then his line didn't see the ice again until the 4:00 mark where they didn't have a great shift with the puck ending up in their own end on a Freddy frozen puck. Not a good look from someone who's battling for a job on the fourth line right now.

Calgary vs Toronto - Dec.12th, 2019

Well that was a frustrating loss. A winnable game wasted in the third period. For some reason, the Leafs took the foot off the gas and l...
